Homeschooling many children in a small house requires organization and good systems! We have ten children, from teen to infant, and just one small room that functions as a living room, dining room, and homeschool space. Baskets and bookshelves ensure that every item has a home and can be easily found when needed. We regularly reassess the space to make sure that we’re not holding on to anything we no longer use. “A place for everything and everything in its place” is the motto we live by here!<\/p>\n\n\n\n

This bookshelf hangs above our dining room table. On the lowest shelf, you’ll find children’s picture books, our art supply drawer for our favorite art supplies, personal bibles, and a big basket of headphones and other supplies. The middle bookshelf holds reference books for science, history, and language arts, as well as a few kids book series<\/a> that couldn’t fit above.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The top shelf houses chapter books<\/a> that are not currently being read. Children also have stacks of books in their personal spaces. My grandma used to say “A house without books laying everywhere makes me feel suspicious.” Books and musical instruments are definitely the primary decor in our home!<\/p>\n\n\n\n

<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Since our wall space is limited we’ve added other bookshelves in unique places, such as above our living room windows. This allows a place for less frequently used books to be stored, as well as a spot for paints<\/a> (because toddlers and easy-to-reach paints are not a good combination!)<\/em>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Baskets and bins on the floor hold things that are regularly used, such as our dry-erase boards, clipboards, and laptops. We also have designated one box for library books, so they can easily be found when it’s library return day. Next to this are bins for our early reader books and homeschool supplies for the youngest children. There is also a small toy box for the toddler. Additional toys are stored on a shelf in our laundry room and brought down when someone wants to play with them. <\/p>\n\n\n\n
