9 Christmas Picture Books You’ll Want to Read Again

December 1, 2023 by Julie kreke 1 Comment

All year long I keep a collection of books tucked away for the month of December. Over the years we’ve amassed a large collection and the children enjoy pulling out a new book from the bag each day. This list shares nine of our favorite Christmas books. Read on, then share some of yours in a comment below!

Christmas Day in the Morning

This precious book from the 1950s is the story of a man who remembers a Christmas long ago when he gave his father the gift of rising early to do his farm chores for him. This moving story will become a favorite!

Apple Tree Christmas

Apple Tree Christmas tells the story of the beloved family apple tree that has been destroyed in a blizzard, and how the father creates surprises from the tree for his children.

The Story of Holly & Ivy

Ivy is an orphan longing for a home and family. She sets out in search of her grandmother and discovers a most beautiful doll, Holly, along the way. As the story progresses we learn about the childless Mr. and Mrs. Jones, and how their wish for a daughter of their own will be answered in an amazing way.

Mortimer’s Christmas Manger

In a sweet telling of the meaning behind the nativity, Mortimer leaves his dark dingy home in search of something better, and discovers the Christmas manger! This book easily becomes a favorite that your kids will want to hear over and over.

The Year of the Perfect Christmas Tree

Papa has had to leave their Appalachian home because of the war, which means Ruthie and her mother now must try to figure out how to fulfill their obligation to get the perfect Christmas tree to town for the special celebration.

The Christmas Miracle of Jonathan Toomey

This book follows the story of Jonathan Toomey, an amazing woodcarver who is also a widow that never smiles. His life changes forever when he is commissioned to create a piece for a widow and her young son. This moving story has become a Christmas classic.

Mr. Willowby’s Christmas Tree

In this fun tale, the Christmas tree that is too large for Mr. Willowby’s parlor gets shared again and again with others, from the upstairs maid to the mouse that lives in the mansion wall.

You Can Do It, Sam

This sequel to Kiss Goodnight Sam follows the bear and his mama as they make surprise treats for their neighbors.

The Animals’ Christmas Eve

In a rhyming story perfect for little ones, the Christmas story is told from the perspective of the animals who are gathered around the baby Jesus.
